Aims
1. To establish a clear coordinated strategy for the national campaign, by sharing experiences and best practice and devising an action plan for the future.
2. To continue momentum established by detainees' actions, by the new London Against Detention, campaigning on medical issues, activities in Manchester, Scotland, Oxford and other initiatives, parliamentary action etc.
3. To bring together current campaigners from across the country.
4. Not to talk about how bad the current system is.
Structure
The day will be split between a morning session in which everyone is together, and an afternoon session of separate workshops charged with devising an action plan around the following themes:
1. Making an impact in the media. If the campaign is to succeed we need to get our voices heard in the mainstream media. How will we manage this? At a local and a national level.
2. Direct Action. Demonstrations, rallies, and other stunts are an important aspect of the campaign. How to make these most effective? What are the best tactics?
3. Changing the law. Ultimately we want the law changed. How to penetrate parliament and how best to lobby?
4. Building support from interest groups. Trades unions, other professional organisations, various groups in civil society: these are the people who are best positioned to vocalise dissent and effect change. How can we build support among these groups?
The groups will return at 4.15pm with a solid set of proposals, to put together into a "strategic action plan".
To be invited
CCC, LAD, London No Borders, NCADC, campaigners from Dungavel, Manchester, Dover, Haslar, Yarl's Wood, Nottingham, Brighton. Refugee and other migrant groups: Congolese, Iraqis, Kurds. Other groups: JCWI, BID, Medical Justice, Amnesty, Liberty, ILPA, trades unions with anti-detention policies. European comrades should also be invited: Migreurop, Euro anti detention days of action network
