Life inside Campsfield House - December 2002

Conditions inside contine to be poor. Legal advice is confusing - and according to the detainees sometimes wrong. Legal 'advisers' get innocent migrants to pay hundreds of pounds to be represented - unnecessarily.

Despite 9 years of complaints about health care in Campsfield, it remains poor.Doctor paracetemol gives minimail help; people needing urget hospital care have to wait for two Group 4 guards to be available, handcuffing even for dental treatment is the norm.

Although now technically a removal centre, lengths of stay continue to rise. Some have been in for over a year. Increasing numbers of people who have lived and worked in the uk for many years are in Campsfield, picked up by the notorious 'snatch squads' from their homes.

despite Group 4 boasts of zero tolerance of racism, detainees continue to report racist language and brutality of approach. Only this month one detainee was 'freed' late on a Saturday evening into the rain in his tee shirt with no knowledge of the area, and only a pak-a-mac to keep him dry. He was given an address to go to 50 miles away, with no directions of how to get there.

Campsfield was to close in March 2003. This has been put off until March 2004. Meanwhile the sum of human misery inside its gates continues to grow.

The History of the Campsfield Nine
2003-07-07 - In 1998 the trial of nine former detainees from Campsfield collapsed spectacularly when the evidence of Group 4 witnesses was shown to be very unreliable.
In an extract from her book Open Borders: the case against immigration controls (Pluto Press 2000), Teresa Hayter of the Campaign to Close Campsfield and Barbed Wire Britain Network sums up the events surrounding the trial.
